Otto Piening, a division of the DEUTSCHE YACHTEN Group, has for the first time developed a variable-pitch propeller (available in the product library) that can be operated with a water-based hydraulic system. The water-based hydraulic system pitching paddle (purchased by the product library) is currently being patented and will be exhibited at the Hamburg Maritime Conference on September 6-9 this year.

The system is the world's first water-based hydraulic system with adjustable pitch propellers. It has been certified by the DNV GL classification society and is recognized by the mega-yacht (ship-type shipyard) market. It is also environmentally friendly as a naval and coastal guard ship. .

The water-based hydraulic system adjustable pitch propeller passed more than 2 million pitch adjustment cycles and one and a half years of intensive internal development work under full power conditions at Piening Propeller Inc. Tests have shown that the propeller wear and destruction rate is very low. Good test results were obtained due to the high-performance composite material that was specially sprayed (purchased in the product library) in the area where the maximum mechanical stress was to be applied.

Water as a hydraulic fluid will provide users with a full range of benefits. The first is cost savings, and it can be applied in most parts of the world, while at the same time facilitating storage.

Because there are few leaks, there is no environmental risk, which means that the ship can sail in any area. Even if seawater enters the hydraulic system, it does not matter. Moreover, water as a lubricant is not combustible under any circumstances.

After many customer requests, Mathias Pein, managing partner who has been seeking to develop this product since 2013, explained, “However, our PCP-type adjustable pitch propeller has been optimized in many areas.” For example, propeller paddles The hub/diameter ratio, taking into account the fluid dynamics, not only improves the control mechanism for the impeller and pitch, but also modifies its structure. In addition, a new feature is that the blades can be bolted to the inside and outside of the hub.

These necessary components are the same clockwise and counterclockwise rotating propeller. This can reduce the number of components. The flexible sealing of the blade roots and the special corrosion-resistant material will further enhance the characteristics of this type of propeller.

A series of tests conducted under the strict and rigorous supervision of the DNV GL classification society were carried out using a five-leaf adjustable pitch propeller mounted on a 650 mm hub. The force generated during the test was 3,300 kW at a rate of 440 rpm.
