The latest round of China-Japan strategic dialogue ended on Saturday in Beijing (February 23). The two countries conducted further consultations on the development of natural gas resources in the East China Sea but failed to reach a consensus.
The Xinhua News Agency reported that both China and Japan agree that they must continue to make efforts in accordance with the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries so far to strive to properly resolve this issue as soon as possible in the process of further development of bilateral relations.
China and Japan have already held 12 rounds of official talks on this issue, but none have reached a compromise. Both China and Japan claim to have economic rights in parts of the East China Sea.
Beijing has stated that it hopes to resolve the dispute before President Hu Jintao visits Japan in spring. This will be the first visit to Japan by the top leader of China in 10 years.
“Hu Jintao’s visit to Japan this year is a historical visit to the future. The two sides are willing to strengthen cooperation to ensure that the visit is a complete success and promote the genuine and stable development of Sino-Japanese relations,†Xinhua quoted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying.
The two-day eighth round of the China-Japan Strategic Dialogue was led by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi and the Foreign Ministry’s deliberative office in Japan.
